Zitat Today (=01.02.2026) marks the final day of operation for one of the original attractions at Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World (Lake Buena Vista, FL – USA). After almost 28 years, the park is saying goodbye to Dinosaur, a fast motion-based dark ride that has been with the park since its opening.

Animal Kingdom opened as the fourth theme park at the Walt Disney World resort in 1998. The park combines attractions with animal exhibits, creating a hybrid of a theme park and zoo. The park contained a themed zone called DinoLand U.S.A. with several dinosaur-themed attractions. The centerpiece was the dark ride Countdown to Extinction, an action-packed time travel adventure that sent guests back in time to prehistoric times. Two years later, Countdown to Extinction was renamed simply ‘Dinosaur’, to promote the Disney animated film of the same name, though the ride did not change.

To take a ride on Dinosaur, guests had to enter the Dino Institute at DinoLand U.S.A. The queue line took guests along several displays on dinosaurs, and eventually into a large octagon room containing a large Carnotaurus skeleton as a centerpiece. The queue line contained background narration by Bill Nye.

After completing the queue, guests are led into a pre-show room, where Dr. Marsh (played by Phylicia Rashad) explains on a video broadcast to guests that they are about to embark on a journey on a ‘Time Rover’—a special vehicle that will take them back in time for a gentle tour of the Cretaceous period. Dr. Seeker (played by Wallace Langham) takes over the broadcast and tells guests that he has another plan. He wants to send guests to the late Cretaceous period, right before the impact of the meteor that made all dinosaurs extinct, to bring back and save an Iguanodon, named Aladar.

Dinosaur utilized so-called Enhanced Motion Vehicles that were developed by Walt Disney Imagineering. These vehicles were first seen on Indiana Jones Adventure (1995) at Disneyland and later on Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull (2001) at Tokyo DisneySea. These resemble large all-terrain vehicles and can carry up to 12 guests. The layout of Dinosaur is very similar to Indiana Jones Adventure.

The ride itself started with the ‘time tunnel’, sending the Time Rover back in time to a dark night in the late Cretaceous period. The rover passes several dinosaurs in the dark, including encounters with the dangerous Carnotaurus, with some intense motion on a journey to find the Iguandon. With each moment that passes, the astroid comes closer, sending several small meteorites to crash around the vehicle. At the very last moment, right before passing back through the time tunnel, the Iguandon is found. While the Time Rover makes its way back into the station, a video shows the saved Iguandon, roaming through the Dino Institute.

Dinosaur and DinoLand U.S.A. is closing to make way for a new themed land, The Tropical Americas. This land will feature two new dark rides: the brand new Encanto-themed La Casita Encantada and Dinosaur redesigned as Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Foliated Cross. The Tropical Americas is expected to open in 2027.
