WB Movie World ends Six Flags relationship

MADRID -- Madrid's two-year-old Warner Bros. Movie World theme park has ended its 99-year management contract with Six Flags Inc. and has opted for self-management, it announced on Tuesday.

The park will continue its licensing agreement with Warner Bros., which will maintain its 4% holding in the park.

Two and a half years after its opening, the park is weighed down by a $41.9 million debt. It has seen only 1.1 million visitors this year -- less than half of the expected admissions.

The decision was made late Monday at a theme park administrative board meeting in which all Six Flags representatives resigned their board positions, including CEO and general manager Mike Foerster.

The Madrid regional government holds the controlling stake in the park, which shareholders say is failing due to a rushed opening and a failed marketing strategy. Rumors abound that the government is looking to shed its 43.6% share.

Jesus Sainz, president of the Warner Park company, will take over the management of the company and outline a "marketing and operations plan that strengthens the park's position in the market, as well as a business plan and a financing plan that assures viability," the company said in a statement.

Bereits im Oktober wurde die Trennung von Terra Mitica und dem Parkmanagement durch Paramount Parks bekannt gegeben.
Zitat Terra Mitica cuts ties with Paramount Parks (OCT 25; 3:00 PM) According to published reports, Spanish theme park Terra Mitica is cutting ties with its management company, Viacom subsidiary Paramount Parks, as it faces continuing losses.

Their agreement was to expire January 1, 2006. Instead, shareholders have decided to terminate the deal at the end of this year.

Paramount Parks is responsible for admissions, security and attractions; the park uses Paramount's brand name and logo but has no Paramount brand attractions.

Terra Mitica opened in 2000 and has been losing money ever since. Its construction budget ballooned from $318 million to $467 million. Last year it lost $85 million.

In May of this year, Terra Mitica suspended payments to protect it from creditors owed debts of $261.1 million.

The park's principal shareholders are looking for interested buyers and new management.
