Magic Springs & Crystal Falls theme park in Hot Springs on Tuesday announced a new $2 million "Plummet Summit" water ride, part of a two-year, $7 million expansion plan.

The new "Plummet Summit" shoot-the-chute ride, which the park said can accommodate 1,000 passengers per hour, is scheduled to be ready by Memorial Day.

"The shoot-the-chute ride will be the biggest of its kind in our region and will maintain Magic Springs' reputation for constantly enriching the experience that our guests enjoy," said Dan Aylward, COO of Themeparks LLC, which operates Magic Springs.

The ride includes 20-passenger boats carrying riders to the top of a large chute. The boats plunge from the top of the chute, creating a splash. The 50-feet-high ride is being made in China.

Park officials also said the park would seek voter approval of a state-guaranteed $4.1 million bond issue to help finance portions of the $7 million expansion, which includes the water ride. It said no tax increase would be involved in obtaining the bonds.

"This is private bond financing for which the park is solely responsible for repayment," Aylward said. "The only state involvement is by a guarantee that allows the bonds to be sold at a better interest rate. Magic Springs has made all payments regarding the bonds sold to date and will continue to do so in the future."

The Hot Springs Board of Directors will consider the bond issue at its Jan. 17 meeting. If approved, the election would be held on Tuesday, March 8.

In 2003, Hot Springs voters approved a $4.4 million bond issue to fund a new $7 million roller coaster for the park.

Aylward said the park broke all attendance records in 2004 with more than 400,000 visiting the park.
